Pelion is deep in southern Lexington County, out where the county is farmland and pine woods more than anything else. It is a small town with a big sense of itself, best known for the Pelion Peanut Party that brings the whole community out every fall for boiled peanuts cooked from recipes families have kept for generations. Kids here go to schools in Lexington County School District One, and most homes sit on real acreage, with gardens, gravel drives, and open fields that run right up to the porch.
All that open land is the reason carpet in Pelion takes a beating. When the yard is sandy Lexington County soil and the driveway is dirt, there is no way to keep the outside outside. Every trip in carries soil onto the floor, and farm and garden work pulls in even more. Rural homes are simply harder on carpet, and the dirt that comes in is the kind that settles deep.
Sandy soil, clay, and the long summer
The soil south of Springdale runs sandy with red clay mixed through it, and both find their way into carpet. Sand grinds at the fibers like fine grit, while the clay pigment sets into the pile and refuses to come up with ordinary cleaner. Trying to scrub clay out only spreads it. It needs to be lifted, and our carbonated solution does exactly that, floating the embedded soil up to the surface so we can pull it out rather than work it deeper.
The humidity is the other half. Out in the country a lot of homes do not run the air conditioning hard through the day, so summer moisture works into the carpet padding and stays put. That damp pad is where a musty smell takes hold. Steam cleaning makes it worse, leaving the carpet soaked for hours. We use a low-moisture method that floats the dirt out and leaves the carpet dry in about an hour, no wet pad, no lingering smell.
